NEW DELHI: RR Swain has been appointed as the director general of police,
Jammu and Kashmir, by the Ministry of Home Affairs. His tenure will last until September 30, 2024. Swain has been serving as the additional charge of the post prior to this appointment.
"With the approval of the Competent Authority, Shri R. R. Swain, IPS (AGMUT: 1991), currently holding the additional charge of the post of Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, is hereby appointed to the post of Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir with effect from the date of assumption of charge and till 30.09.2024 or until further orders, whichever is earlier," Ministry of Home Affairs said in an order dated August 6.
The decision to appoint Swain comes amidst a recent surge in terror attacks in the Jammu region. In recent months, there have been incidents such as an attack on an army convoy in Kathua and encounters in Doda and Udhampur.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reported to the Lok Sabha that from the beginning of the year until July 21, a total of 28 individuals, including both civilians and security personnel, lost their lives in 11 terror-related incidents and 24 encounters or counter-terror operations.
Last month, an Indian Army operation successfully thwarted an attack by the Pakistan Border Action Team (BAT) along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Machchal sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, resulting in the death of one Pakistani intruder. Unfortunately, one Indian Army soldier was killed, and four others, including a major-rank officer, sustained injuries during the attack.
