Cybercrime cases on rise in Steel City
For instance, Nischay, a social organisation’s page in Jamshedpur, was hacked in January and the complaint was filed on February 17 but the cyber thana has received no response even after reporting it to Meta. Nischay has been working on menstrual health among rural girls and posting its activities on its Facebook page.
“We used to post our activities on Facebook but suddenly I lost access. Many of my friends complained that the page was posting improper content. I filed a complaint but was asked to wait for three months minimum as Meta has not replied to the complaint filed by the cyber thana,” said Tarun Kumar of Nischay.
Santosh Kumar Sharma, a teacher and owner of Think Classes, said, “My page had 700 followers and I used to post education and wisdom-related posts but it was hacked. I have been asked to wait for three months.”
The number of complaints received by the police station may just be the tip of the iceberg as many pages do not even bother to complain. “The problem is that there is no point of contact when it comes to complaints to Meta or WhatsApp. We have to rely on the response from the company headquarters in the US,” said an official of cyber police station.
“Technology is moving ahead at a fast pace. For hacking and impostor accounts or account blocking, we do report to the authorities concerned. The only thing is that people should be aware and follow all guidelines,” said DSP (cyber) Vidya Shankar.
