JAMSHEDPUR: A tusker trampled to death a 42-year-old identified as Rohin Singh Munda in the Balidih forest area under the Chowka police station limits of the Chandil sub-division in Seraikela-Kharsawan district early on Saturday, Chandil range forest official Shashi Prakash Ranjan said.

The victim, a resident of Dalma foothills in Tamar, had gone to the jungle to collect mahua early at 4 am when the elephant trampled him, Ranjan said.

The body was shifted to the Seraikela Sadar Hospital (SSH) for the post-mortem examination.

The administration gave Rs 50,000 to the victim’s family as interim relief to conduct the last rites. The remaining amount of the compensation specified by the government would be provided to the bereaved family members upon completion of the legal and administrative procedures, the forest official said.

The official said two herds comprising a total of 44 elephants were being chased by two forest department teams to the Saranda forest. One group was engaged in driving away 41 elephants while another team was chasing three elephants away. The victim walked into the forest area when the two herds were on the way to Saranda forest when he was trampled by one of the herds, he added.

Notably, four villagers have lost their lives in separate incidents of man-elephant conflict in the Chandil forest area between January and April this year.
