HAZARIBAG/JAMSHEDPUR: A 10-year-old girl in Hazaribag was killed in wall collapse, and another 12-year-old boy was killed in lightning strike in Baharagora block of East Singhbhum district after heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm hit many parts of the state on Friday.
The girl, identified as Simran Kumari of Alongja village, was killed when a portion of a wall of her house collapsed following heavy rain in Hazaribag on Friday.
The Ichak police inspector-cum-OC, Dhananjay Kumar Singh, rushed her to Shekh Bhikhari College and Medical Hospital in Hazaribag where she died during treatment.
H'bag records highest wind speed of 81kmph The 12-year-old boy, identified as Shankar Singh, was killed in a lightning strike, while his mother escaped with minor injuries at Bankata village in Baharagora block of East Singhbhum district on Friday, said Baharagora police station in-charge, Satan Kumar. The boy duo was carrying a grain sack over his head to home, along with his mother, Sarla Devi, when rain started.
On way to home from the field, the duo was struck by a lightning and fell unconscious. Passers-by rushed the two to a community health centre, but the boy couldn't be saved. His mother was discharged after first aid.
Most parts of state received light to moderate rain during the past 48 hours with high wind speed and heavy rainfall recorded in isolated pockets. Hazaribag recorded highest wind speed, gusting upto 81kmph causing widespread damage to electric poles, overhead wires and uprooting of trees. Maximum rainfall of 78mm was recorded in Nanadih, Giridih on Friday while Jamshedpur recorded 79mm rainfall till Thursday night. Hazaribag experienced 19mm rainfall.
Another woman, identified as Bimla Devi, was injured when an asbestos sheet flew from a house when storm hit Hazaribag on Friday. The woman was immediately rushed to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital where her condition deteriorated after which the doctors referred her to Rims, Ranchi.
Power transmission line was also disrupted in the district, said A K Singh, executive engineer, JBVNL Hazaribag division. "It is difficult to say when the power will be restored. 35 poles were razed to the ground and more than hundred trees fell on the transmission line due to which the wires are in tatters. Large number of insulators, transformers and transmission line were severely damaged," he said.
The barrack of the police driver and staff in the district was badly destroyed in the storm. The Hazaribag SP, Manoj Ratan Chothe, said that the administration has accommodated the staff in a separate building and ordered immediate repair of the police barrack.
Director incharge IMD Ranchi Abhishek Anand said there are chances of low to medium rain in the central and western parts of the state on Saturday. IMD also said the chances of thunderstorm and gusting winds will reduce from Saturday onwards and the day temperature would start increasing by a few notches from Sunday onwards as the rainfall activity starts decreasing.
