JAMSHEDPUR: After it came to light that several shady pathological laboratories were functioning in
Jamshedpur
without a doctor,
East Singhbhum
DC Suraj Kumar directed officials to take stringent action against such establishments.
Sources said most of these laboratories are located just outside the city limits and they regularly carry out pre-natal gender screening, which is banned in the country under the Pre-Conception and
Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act
(PC-PNDT Act) since 1994.
The DC said that a list of such laboratories must be made immediately and owners must be booked under relevant provisions of the law.
Notably, an internal report tabled in November last year before the East Singhbhum administration had noted an alarming fall in the district’s sex ratio. The report said the male to female sex ratio in the district was 1000:922. As per the last census conducted in 2011, the ratio was 1000:949.
