JMM yet to announce candidate for JSR seat
Chief minister Champai Soren said the candidate’s name would soon be announced. “There is joy in waiting, enjoy the wait,” he quipped.
Sources said a party member belonging to the Kurmi community might be nominated against BJP, which has named the party’s sitting MP, Bidyut Baran Mahato, for the third consecutive term. “Kurmi voters constitute a significant chunk, but it would be unfair to say that only caste would decide the poll result,” said Sunil Mahato, one of the contenders for the ticket.
The pressure from the four party MLAs of the Jamshedpur parliament constituency not to give the ticket to a turncoat has left the leadership with little option. A few in the central committee were open to the idea of giving the ticket to an outsider, but strong opposition voiced by the MLAs and the district committee drove the decision makers to shun the idea, said a district committee member.
JMM is also holding backroom talks with the state Congress leadership to decide the candidate, said party sources.
The voting in the Jamshedpur parliament constituency will be held on May 25.
