“For the past couple of years, we have been buying organic colours online. There are some amazing brands that sell organic colours made out of flowers. They are expensive, but safe. We also rerquest others to opt for the safer kind,” said Shubhrashi Dwivedi, a homemaker in Sonari.
“Many customers these days want only organic colours and are happy to pay more also. A packet of pure organic and herbal colours costs more than Rs 80,” said Vikram Kumar, a shopkeeper in Sakchi.
Dermatologists also urged people to maintain caution while playing with colours. They also shared a couple of tips to stay safe during the festival.
Herbal colours are hypoallergenic and easier to clean. Non-herbal bright colours usually contain copper sulphate or lead oxide. Herbal colours do not have option for bright and dark colours.
“Synthetic colours are rough. It is advisable to opt for costly packet colours that may not be bright but will not damage the skin. It is very difficult to check ingredients as there is nothing mentioned on packets. So, it’s better to test it before using," said dermatologist Raju Kumar.
