Jamshedpur to relocate stray cattle to Chakuliya shed
JAMSHEDPUR: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has come up with a plan to catch stray cattle loitering on city roads and send them to the ‘goushala’ (cowshed) in Chakuliya area of the East Singhbhum district.
This plan was chalked out after a meeting of the JNAC officials with the members of the Jan Sewa Sangh Trust and representatives of the local cowshed on Thursday.
JNAC special officer Sanjay Kumar said, “An action plan is being formulated on how to catch stray cattle and shift them to the cowshed in Chakuliya, about 60km from Jamshedpur near an airstrip built during World War II.” This facility is one of the biggest in the eastern region of the country, where thousands of cattle, many of which were seized from smugglers, are kept. Even sick cattle are treated at the cowshed.
The move was initiated after a stray bull gored to death businessman Ashok Agarwal and Raj Kishore at Sakchi market area in the wee hours last Friday.
Lately, several such incidents took place in many other areas as well. As per estimates, more than 1000 stray cattle loiter the busy thoroughfares of the city causing traffic snarls.
After the Sakchi market attack the bull was tranquillized and sent to a cowshed in the city on Friday, where it died the next day. SDO Piyish Kumar Mishra who rushed to the spot after the incident assured that steps would be taken to solve the animal menace on city roads.
After the attack, the president of Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Vijay Nanad Moonka had demanded compensation from the state government for the kin of the deceased. On Tuesday, a delegation of senior citizens also submitted a letter to the administration seeking action against the stray cattle on roads as old people and children are easy targets of the animals.
A similar letter has been written by the SCCI on Thursday to the Tata Steel administration and state minister Banna Gupta to take measures to check stray cattle menace on roads and and in market places.
Sources said for a long time JNAC and other civic bodies had stopped catching stray cattle on roads due to lack of space for rehabilitation, which has led to a sharp rise in animals loitering on the city roads.
