JAMSHEDPUR: More than 15,000 population living in a dozen plus residential areas within the Mango Notified Area Committee (JNAC) limits have been facing water shortage for about a week. Irregular water supply to the households in the colonies and slums is largely on account of erratic electricity supply, besides, leakages in the underground pipes supplying water to the homes.

"For over a week we have been facing water problem. Some are buying bubble top water cans while others getting it from tubewells," said Jawarharnagar resident Md Zainul. Now, due to the depletion of ground water level, tubewells are not lifting sufficient water. Residents said often water is supplied in the night due to which they have to be on alert even during the wee hours.

"Even at night, pressure of the water is so low that we could hardly fill sufficient water," said Nagesh Kumar, a resident of Post Office Road. Further, residents have complained that the authorities aren't proactive in deploying tankers to supply the water. "One tanker of water costs 400," said Bagansahi resident Md Naeem.

MNAC water supply line in-charge Rahul Kumar said everyday five tankers are doing the rounds in the affected areas 24 hours. "It is not correct to say that MNAC is not proactive in addressing the water problem," Kumar said.

Residents of Bagansahi staged a demonstration at the office of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department (DWSD) at Jawarharnagar on last Saturday.

DWSD executive engineer Jason Horo has said process is underway to connect the underground damaged pipes with the functional pipes to increase the flow of water to households.

Mango filter plant in-charge Arjun Shahi has said due to the irregular power supply the overhead tanker is not filled to its capacity and as a result supply to the households is not regular.

Meanwhile, residents of Premanagar, Laxminagar, Mishra Bagan, Jhagru Bagan and surrounding colonies have began receiving water tanker service from Thursday.

Last week, residents from these areas approached MLA Saryu Rai seeking help. On the request of the legislator, Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Ltd deployed some tankers to supply water. JNAC has announced to supply water in tankers to Premanagar and adjoining areas. Crisis has also hit Bagbera, Kitadih, Harhargutu, Pursudih, and, adjoining areas in outer part of the Steel City. Former zila parishad vice-chairman Raj Kumar Singh arranged water tankers on personal expense.
