Farmers face DAP fertilizer shortage
JIND: Farmers have been facing DAP crunch continuously in the region as they are now forced to return empty-handed despite waiting in long lines for hours. On Sunday, when employees arrived with a truckload of DAP fertilizer, to distribute among farmers but due to long queues of farmers, officials had to resort to police protection for this task.
The police had to put in a lot of effort to control the crowd. Farmers are not receiving fertilizer according to their needs, leading to increased hardship. Due to a shortage of supply and high demand, farmers' difficulties are worsening.
On Sunday, 1,986 bags of DAP fertilizer arrived in Julana, but the demand exceeded supply, leaving many farmers without fertilizer. However officials stated that around 2,000 bags of DAP fertilizer had arrived in Julana. Due to the farmers' agitation, the distribution was conducted at the police station. To maintain security, fertilizer was distributed at the police station rather than the official purchase center, as handling a large number of bags involves significant cash.
Issuing a warning against the government, Majra khap leaders including Gurwinder Singh Sandhu and Samundar Phour stated that there is a rush for fertilizer for sowing crops, with farmers standing in lines outside fertilizer shops even at night. Fertilizer is being hoarded in large warehouses. What are government officials doing? Recently, in Narwana, the Chief Minister's flying squad seized a large quantity of fertilizer sacks, and the Khap Panchayat appreciates this but questions why local officials were unaware of this illegal stock. They should also be held accountable. In the markets, farmers’ crops are being sold at throwaway prices, while slogans are being raised that MSP (Minimum Support Price) exists and will remain. However, on the ground, there is nothing but looting and farmers are being harassed by this government.
