Rain destroys crops in Jodhpur and Phalodi, many farms inundated

Jodhpur: Incessant rain for over a month has spelt doom for the farmers in Jodhpur and Phalodi districts. According to an estimate by the agriculture department, the kharif crops have suffered a loss from 40% to 80% in areas reporting heavy rains.
Many agriculture fields had a water logging upto 2-3 feet and some still have water standing with no means to drain it out of the fields. Persistent rains have increased farmers’ difficulties in many villages of the two districts.
According to officials of agriculture department, a report of this loss has already been submitted to govt and further action is awaited. The report has stated that close to 4 lakh bighas in Jodhpur and close to 3 lakh bigha land in Phalodi has been affected by heavy rain, devastating the crops of bajra, til, moong, jowar and moth. State secretary of Bhartiya Kisan Sangh T R Sivar said that there should be expedited attempts for girdavari report so that the farmers could begin preparation for the cultivation of rabi crops like onion, arandi, carrot, etc. "Farmers cannot wait longer and if the girdavari report is not undertaken earliest, the farmers would suffer both ways," he said. Officials claimed that a separate survey for rain affected crops has also been initiated.
