Elderly cyclist dies after being hit by car

Kanpur: An elderly cyclist sustained severe injuries after a car collision near the COD bridge, ultimately leading to his death on Saturday evening. The victim, Anwar Ahmed, aged 70, was a sheet metal factory worker from Shujaat Ganj Chanderi.According to his family members, the incident occurred on Saturday evening when Anwar was cycling to the Dalel Purwa factory. Near the DCP East office, a speeding white car going from COD towards Tat Mill struck him from behind, causing him to lose consciousness. The motorist abandoned the scene immediately after the collision.Local people used the victim's mobile phone to alert his son and transported him to Kanshi Ram Hospital. Due to his critical condition, the doctors transferred him to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was travelling with a speed between 80-100 km/h at the time of impact. The accident has raised concerns about road safety in the area, particularly for cyclists and pedestrians. The stretch of road near the COD bridge has witnessed several accidents in recent months, prompting locals to demand enhanced safety measures.The police have formed a special team to investigate the hit-and-run case. They are examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments and traffic cameras to trace the white car's route and identify its registration number. Anwar Ahmed's family members said that he had been working at the sheet metal factory for over three decades and was the primary breadwinner. The Rail Bazar police station in-charge, Bahadur Singh, said that they requested the family to lodge a formal complaint and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the vehicle involved in the incident. The police have also appealed to the public to come forward with any information about the white car or its driver. The investigation remains ongoing, with officers collecting statements from eyewitnesses and examining evidence from the accident site.
