Joyal, Karan strike double hundred as UP in command against Assam
Kanpur: Aryan Joyal and Karan Sharma’s maiden double centuries and their 298 runs partnership for the third wicket helped UP sit in a comfortable position as the hosts declared their first innings on a mammoth total of 8 for 548 against Assam on the second day of the Ranji trophy tie on Saturday.Assam on a flat Green Park strip was trying to give a befitting reply and got some success as opener Pervez Musharraf and Rahul Hazarika finished the day with a score 116 for no loss. Both the batsmen displayed that they were not in a hurry and have patience to pick the right balls to score runs.UP’s innings revolved around Aryan Juyal and Karan Sharma as both had hit their first double century in the listed tie. Aryan, who had indicated to score a double century on day one, fulfilled his dream in the morning. Resuming his innings from overnight individual score of 162, he continued from where he had left on Friday. With a single to Akash Sengupta he completed his double century. But in the very next over his grand innings ended when he attempted to cut spinner Rahul Singh and bowled. His 201 runs came in 278 balls with the help of 21 boundaries and a six. His departure ended the 298 runs partnership with Karan Sharma.Karan batted strongly from one end to the other end. UP lost captain Nitish Rana. In a bid to raise the run rate he lifted Rahul Singh and Pervez Musharraf accepted the catch gleefully at long on. Nitish contributed just 10 runs.Thereafter Akshdeep Nath and Karan Sharma combined in the middle and executed the second best partnership of the innings of 83 runs for the fifth wicket. Akshdeep Nath after completing his half century edged Rahul Singh to wicket keeper Abhishek Thakur. He contributed 53 runs in 78 balls hitting 8 boundaries.Karan Sharma from the other end stroked Assam bowlers with great ease and completed his double century with a boundary in 300 balls. He overall faced 310 balls and hit 22 boundaries and 3 sixes. Eight runs later captain Nitish Rana declared UP’s first innings on 8 for 548.Score board: UP first Innings-Aryan Juyal b Rahul Singh 201, Samarth Singh lbw Mrinmoy Dutta 0, Prince Yadav lbw Mukhtar Hussain 46, Karan Sharma c Denis Das b Mrinmoy Dutta 208, Nitish Rana c Pervez Musharraf b Rahul Singh 10, Akshdeep Nath C Abhishek Thakur b Rahul Singh 53, Sameer Rizvi c Abhishek Thakur b Mrinmoy Dutta 14, Shiva Singh no3, Shivam Sharma c Sahil Jain b Mrinmoy Dutta 3, Extras-10, Total 8 for 548 innings declared (123.3 overs). Assam first innings-Pervez Musharraf batting 53, Rahul Hazarika batting 51, Extras 12, total-116 for no loss (39 overs).
