Kanpur kidney racket: OT technician posed as urologist, performed 40-50 kidney transplants
Kanpur: The Kanpur police investigation into an illegal kidney transplant racket has uncovered a shocking twist — an operation theatre (OT) manager, posing as a urologist, allegedly performed recent transplants.Police said the OT manager, Mudassar Ali, had connections with Dr Rohit, Shivam Agrawal and other paramedical staff. He allegedly removed a kidney from an MBA student and transplanted it into a woman.Investigators said Mudassar had no medical qualifications and is alleged to have performed numerous kidney transplants, with estimates suggesting 40-50 operations.Police investigations have revealed new leads, including the alleged involvement of a foreign woman and the death of a woman during a transplant. These aspects are currently under probe, adding another layer to the ongoing inquiry into the illegal kidney transplant racket in Kanpur.A police team visited his flat in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, where his wife identified him as an OT manager. Police said they were actively searching for Mudassar.Arrested OT technicians Kuldeep Singh Raghav and Rajesh Kumar told police that Mudassar travelled with them by flight from Delhi to Kanpur and allegedly performed the surgery, removing the kidney from the MBA student and transplanting it into a recipient. Both patients were later transferred to different hospitals.Police said Mudassar also conducted a kidney transplant at Medilife Hospital in the Maswanpur area of Kalyanpur, Kanpur, in Dec last year. When police visited the hospital, they found it closed, and the owner reportedly went into hiding after the scam was exposed. Investigators said Medilife Hospital was operated in partnership by three doctors, Dr Rohan from Tirva in Kannauj, Dr Sandeep from Saurikh in Kannauj and Dr Narendra from Auraiya. Police said all three were missing after the scam surfaced, and their residences in Kanpur and their hometowns were found locked. Police suspected their involvement in illegal transplant operations.Police teams said they were conducting raids based on information from Kanpur and Meerut to locate all absconding suspects, and authorities anticipated more arrests as the investigation continued.DCP West SM Qasim Abidi stated that eight people have been arrested in connection with the illegal kidney trade at private hospitals in Rawatpur. Police are still raiding to catch others involved.
