Kanpur Metro: Trial run from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central to commence soon
Kanpur: Kanpur Metro's preparations for the commercial operation from IIT to Kanpur Central station are now in the final stage. This month, a test run will be conducted up to Kanpur Central, paving the way for the launch of commercial operations in this section.Kanpur Metro currently operates on the Priority Corridor from IIT to Moti Jheel. This is a nine-km distance that the Metro covers. However, the day is fast approaching when city residents will be able to travel all the way up to Kanpur Central station. This extension will connect key business hubs like Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj to the Metro network. The five stations between Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central—Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central—will be underground. The Metro service between IIT and Moti Jheel will continue to run at intervals of 5-6 minutes, while the underground Metro service will be available every 10-12 minute. The launch of the Metro from IIT to Kanpur Central will significantly improve public transportation in the city and help alleviate traffic congestion. Currently, the road journey between IIT and Moti Jheel takes about 60 to 75 minutes, but with the Metro, the same distance will be covered within 30 minutes. The construction of the Metro track on the 'up-line' from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central was completed. Work on installing tracks, the third rail system, signals, and other infrastructure at the stations along this stretch is now in its final stages. Recently, a successful test run was conducted on both tracks from Moti Jheel to Nayaganj station, during which key systems such as signalling, track, and power supply were tested running the train on Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mode.Managing director of UPMRC, Sushil Kumar praised the progress of Kanpur Metro. He said "The project has overcome numerous challenges and achieved significant milestones during its construction. The speed and efficiency of the Kanpur Metro team are commendable. Our underground Metro route passes beneath some of the busiest areas of the city, ensuring smoother and more convenient travel. Thanks to the close coordination and cooperation of various departments, the installation and construction work at the stations is nearly complete. The finishing touches will be completed soon"."Trial run up to Kanpur Central will commence this month, and we are confident that the remaining work on Corridor-1 will be completed as planned," he added.
