Kanpur: The mastermind behind the theft at a police outpost in Kanpur, wherein service pistol and cartridges and mobile phone of the in-charge were stolen a few days ago, was arrested after a police encounter in Fatehpur, late on Monday night. The criminal, carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head, sustained bullet wounds on his left leg in retaliatory firing by the police and has been admitted to a hospital. The joint team of Jahanabad police and SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) arrested the accused identified as Taufiq Qureshi, a resident of Warisnagar of Chakeri police station, Kanpur from near Abdulhepur village.
Taufiq Qureshi had stolen the service pistol, cash worth Rs 8,000 and a box full of live cartridges belonging to the outpost in-charge Sudhakar Pandey from the New Azadnagar outpost of Bidhnu police station in Kanpur city a week ago. The Kanpur police had arrested two of his associates and sent them to jail while search for Taufiq was underway. Later, a reward of Rs 25,000 was also announced on him.
SP Fatehpur Rajesh Kumar Singh, who had reached the spot said that the injured criminal was wanted by the Kanpur police.
The police team has been given an additional reward of Rs 20,000 for the achievement. The criminal past of the accused is being collected. “A bike without registration number plate, three live cartridges of 9 mm, 315 bore pistol, empty cartridges have been recovered from his possession,” said the official.
