KANPUR: A woman died by suicide during a WhatsApp video call with her husband in Kanpur’s Ramlala Mohalla area of Rawatpur on Wednesday after an argument over money for alcohol.
The deceased was identified as Mona. Her husband, Shubham Diwakar, who was known to be an alcoholic, returned from work on Wednesday evening and demanded money from his wife to purchase alcohol. When she refused, he assaulted her severely, took the money by force and left to drink.
About 16 minutes later, Mona made a tearful video call to Diwakar and hanged herself during the call. Diwakar hurried home to save her, but the door was locked from the inside. Neighbours alerted the police, who broke down the door and attempted to revive Mona with CPR, but she was already dead.
The couple had a love marriage seven years ago and had two children. Mona worked as a welcome girl at wedding functions to help support the family, while Diwakar was employed by a private company.
On hearing the news of Mona’s death, her friends from work gathered outside the postmortem house where her body was taken. In their anger, they surrounded and beat Diwakar. The chaos lasted for about two hours. Mona’s friends also accused Diwakar of deleting call history from her mobile phone to destroy evidence.
Rawatpur police station in-charge Manoj Mishra stated, “Further action will be taken on the basis of evidence and necessary findings and autopsy report.”
