Young lawyer dies by suicide at court
Kanpur: A 23-year-old lawyer Priyanshu Srivastava died by suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the district court in the city’s Kotwali area on Thursday afternoon, police said.
CCTV footage obtained by the police showed Priyanshu speaking on the phone before taking the step. DCP, east, Satyajit Gupta, who reached the spot, said that after Priyanshu’s death, his smartphone showed a suicide note posted as a WhatsApp status. The police have yet to identify the person he was speaking to at that time.
After receiving information about the suicide at the court, police from several stations reached the scene. Priyanshu was taken to Ursula Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The DCP said Priyanshu’s father was contacted but was unable to speak. He said a case would be registered if a written complaint was submitted.
Police sources said the suicide note revealed Priyanshu’s prolonged struggles and mental anguish. He wrote that though he completed his LLB in 2016, he was unable to clear the PCSJ exam. The note mentioned his ongoing stress due to financial hardships and his father’s poor health, as well as the burden of family responsibilities and the difficult conditions at home. Priyanshu admitted he kept his troubles to himself and clarified that no one was responsible for his death. He further requested that after his passing, no one should trouble his mother or cause her any distress because of him.
