Deteriorating health of a man drove him and his wife to commit suicide near

Thattupalam

on

Mannur Road

near Mazhuvannoor late on Thursday.

Police said the couple, Rajan (51) and Geeta (46) set themselves ablaze after pouring petrol over them around 10.45pm. While Rajan died at the scene, his wife was taken to a hospital in

Ernakulam

with more than 76% burns. She died around 10.25am on Friday.

Rajan of Mannur had been suffering renal ailment, police said. He was undergoing dialysis at

Little Flower Hospital

in Angamaly.

On Thursday, the couple, while returning from the hospital after dialysis, bought four litres of petrol from a fuel station on their way home.

They stopped their vehicle-a Maruti Omni-near the bridge and doused themselves with petrol and set themselves on fire, police said. Geeta ran out of the van screaming, catching the attention of local residents.

They rushed her to Polencherry Medical College. But Rajan's life could not be saved.

Fire and rescue personnel from

Pattimattom

doused the fire on the van.

Geeta was shifted to Ernakulam after her conditioned worsened, police said. She died later on Friday.

Ruling out financial burden as the reason for the couple to take the extreme step, police said Rajan and Geeta had married off their daughter, Reshma, last month. Their son Rahul has been working with

CET College

in Irapuram.
