Guest worker falls to death from highrise

Kochi: A 20-year-old guest worker died after falling from a high-rise building at Vyttila on Saturday morning. The deceased was identified as Amarjith Kumar of Gopalganj in Bihar. He was working as a carpenter here. He fell from the 17th floor of a building which was under construction near Silver Sand Island, Vyttila, which the police suspect was an accident.
According to Maradu police, the accident took place around 9am. Kumar was reportedly removing the wooden mould used for roof concreting near the edge of the 17th floor. As per the statements of his fellow workers, he accidentally slipped off and fell directly to the third floor.
Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead. Owing to the impact of the fall from such a height he sustained multiple severe injuries, said the police.
Maradu police have registered a case for unnatural death. The postmortem has been completed and the body has been released.
However, the police are also taking statements from other workers and the worksite supervisor to check if any safety lapses were there. “Prima facie, it was an accident but we are investigating to confirm it,” said a police officer.
