KOCHI: Commissionerate of Customs (Preventive) probing the
Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling case
conducted raids at the house of a
municipal councillor
at Koduvally in Kozhikode and summoned him for questioning to its Kochi office.
It was the house of Karat Faisal, which was raided by customs. According to sources, the raids took place in the early hours of Thursday. The councillor’s residence and a building next to it were raided by the customs preventive wing.
Official sources said that the raid and questioning are based on information received by the probe team in connection with the gold smuggling at Thiruvananthapuram. He would be summoned for questioning and further action would be initiated based on his statement, sources said. Faisal is an independent, representing Ward 27 of Koduvally municipality.
Customs had found out that the gang behind the Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling had an intricate network of buyers and financiers in northern Kerala, especially in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.
The gang had smuggled gold, misusing the diplomatic channel, for twenty times before getting caught during the 21st attempt. Over 160 kilograms were brought in by the accused through these twenty instances of smuggling.
