Kochi: The complainant in the case against Cardinal George Alencherry and others in connection with the controversial land deals of the Ernakulam Angamaly archdiocese on Tuesday moved a petition seeking modifications in the bail granted to the accused in the case.
The court posted the case for further hearing to February 13. The court will also consider a plea to exempt the accused from appearing personally before the court.
Earlier, Cardinal Alencherry had appeared before the court on January 27, and he was granted bail. “The respondent in the case is an influential person. We have moved the court seeking strict conditions in granting bail so that possibilities, including chances of influencing witnesses, can be avoided,” said advocate V Rajendran, counsel for the petitioner. The complainant in the petition is one Joshy Varghese.
The cardinal had to appear before the court for bail after the Kerala High Court had earlier dismissed Alencherry’s petition seeking exemption from the same.
The high court had directed him to face trial in the case.
Later, an oral plea before the Supreme Court seeking a similar exemption was also reportedly declined.
