KOTTAYAM: A police inspector was arrested for his alleged involvement in an overseas job scam here on Wednesday. It was Sanjay C T, 47, a Changanassery native, who was arrested by the Kottayam West police. The arrested was working as the SHO at Thoppumpady police station in Ernakulam. The accused has been under suspension on disciplinary grounds related to another incident.

Police also arrested Preethy Mathew, 51, a Pathanamthitta native, in the overseas job scam involving lakhs of rupees. Preethy was running Can Assure Consultancy here. She received around Rs 8.60 lakh from a woman, promising to get a caregiver job in the UK for her daughter. The woman gave a police complaint after her daughter failed to get a job.

Preethy was arrested in the investigation, and in the further probe, it was found that the inspector, who was under suspension, was also involved in the scam. It was found that the money was transferred to Sanjay's account from Preethy's account, and Sanjay also threatened the complainant over the phone. Following this, Sanjay was also arrested.

There are nine cases registered against Preethy in Kottayam West station and another five cases in other stations in the district. Both were presented before the court before being remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation in the case has been handed over to the Crime Branch, said district police chief Shaul Hameed.
