ALAPPUZHA: Alappuzha bypass will be opened for traffic at 1pm on Thursday by

Union minister of road transport and highways

Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan through video conferencing.

Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Union ministers of state V K Singh and V Muraleedharan, state ministers G Sudhakaran, T M Thomas Isaac and P Thilothaman, MPs A M Ariff and K C Venugopal and Alappuzha municipal chairman Soumya Raj will also be present during the inauguration.

The foundation stone for Alappuzha bypass was laid in 1980. But the completion of the bypass got delayed due to various reasons, including financial constraints. The total cost of the project is Rs.344 crore and the cost is being equally shared by central and state governments. Besides, the state government had also spent additional Rs.25 crore for other work related to the bypass.

On April 10, 2015, Gadkari had inaugurated the longpending construction work of Alappuzha bypass from Kommadi to Kalarkode. Out the 6.8-km bypass, 3.2 km is elevated highway on beach side.

The opening of the bypass will be a big relief for Alappuzha as vehicles commuting through NH towards Thiruvananthapuram and

Kochi

can continue their journey without entering the town.
