: A mother and her child, covered in blanket, sit on an unexploded bombshell in a warzone, probably in Ukraine. In the backdrop, there are fumes arising out of the woods burnt due to bombing and in contrary there is a ‘golden field’ of blossomed sunflowers by the side of it.
The visuals are from one of the paintings that are on display at the ongoing exhibition ‘Invigorating Mindscapes’ at
David Hall
in Fort Kochi. Though the painting is titled Despair, its creator
Gita Mary Elizabeth
, a retired BSNL employee, said that her work focuses on the Ukrainian’s hope for a peaceful and bright future and sunflowers, which have historically represented peace, symbolizes their hope.
The exhibition, organized by Prussian Blue Art Hub and curated by expert painter Suresh T R, presents ‘positive’ works by around 34 artists, mostly women. And many of the artists are not professional painters but doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, teachers, homemakers and scientists who paint out of passion. All the 64 paintings at the exhibition reflect happiness, hope and a new beginning.
“The exhibition is a confluence of emotions of the artists about what happiness is to them,” said Suresh whose work ‘A Whiff of the Woods’, which is a large painting, is also among the exhibits.
An untitled work by Asha Nair, a homemaker, shows an elderly man who partially wears facemask, fills oil in the Chuttuvilak (lamps surrounding the temple) at Ernakulam Shiva temple. “The temple festival was affected by the pandemic for the past two years and when I saw the Chuttuvilak being lighted, I felt it as a new beginning,” Nair said.
A painting by Prasanth K P titled ‘Mattancherry’ features the beauty and heritage of old
Mattancherry
. Another one by
Shalini B Menon
, shows the happiness of children in school uniforms, who goes to the school after the pandemic. The paintings of Doyil Joy features the happiness of dairy and tapioca farmers who got good harvests.
The exhibition, which began on June 4 will be there till Sunday.
