Two siblings drown in abandoned pond in Malappuram
Malappuram: Two young siblings drowned in an abandoned pond at Chathanpara in Irivetty, Kavanur, near Areekode on Thursday evening.
The deceased have been identified as Afiya Fathima, 8, and Afnan Ahmed, 6, children of Ali Cholayil of Puliyarakunnu, Kavanur. The family had recently moved to Irivetty.
Police said the children had returned from school and later went missing. As they could not be traced by evening, relatives and residents began searching the neighbourhood. Their bodies were subsequently located in an unused pond situated near the water authority office at Irivetty.
The bodies were retrieved from the pond with the assistance of police and residents. Initial findings indicate that the children may have accidentally fallen into the water while playing.
Following the completion of inquest proceedings, the bodies were shifted to Manjeri Govt Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
