Following his death, the relatives and friends of the youth staged a protest in front of the police station with his body.

The parents alleged that the youth ended his life due to police torture and action must be initiated against those responsible.

Ashwanth, son of Vijayathulasi of Sooryavasantha Vihar near Chavara Bridge, was called to the police station on Thursday on a complaint filed by an assistant command officer at the Kollam AR camp.

Ashwanth was questioned for three hours at the station and was also allegedly harassed. In the meantime, the daughter of the officer tried to commit suicide by cutting her veins after coming to know that the youth was called to the station.

Ashwanth was released from the station very late at night and he was dropped off at home by his friends.

His family was not aware of these developments, and on Friday morning they found him hanging in his bedroom.

The family and friends of the youth alleged that Ashwanth and the girl were in a relationship and he did not harass the girl as alleged by the police officer. Chavara police have registered a case.

Suicides are preventable and help is just a call away. Those in distress can call Maitri at 0484-2540530 or Emergency Medical Services at 0471- 2552056.
