Nagaland proposes spl econ package to address ENPO statehood demand

Kohima: The Nagaland government has suggested the Centre for implementation of a special economic package to address the demand for a separate statehood by the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO). While talking to the mediapersons, minister K G Kenye emphasised that the ENPO's concerns are primarily economic, highlighting deficiencies in infrastructure, education, health, and lower per capita income compared to the rest of the state.“If those issues are addressed, there will be no other problem… we have to address all those grievances with a more concentrated focus on the ENPO areas,” the Nagaland government spokesperson said.Eastern Nagaland comprises six districts – Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Longleng, Noklak, and Shamator – which are inhabited by seven tribes of Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Tikhir, and Yimkhiung. The ENPO is demanding a separate state of eastern Nagaland.On the state government not addressing the grievances of the ENPO despite huge amounts of funds being pumped in by the Centre for Nagaland since statehood, Kenye said that channelisation of funds might have been wrong or it did not reach the places or for the purpose which it was meant.However, to make up for all that lost time, he said the state government has proposed to the Centre an economic package for the ENPO area so that they march and speed up to catch up with the rest of the state. On the delay of the talks, he said the ministry of home affairs (MHA) and the ENPO have been involved in talks without the state government for too long… had they involved the state government from the very beginning it could not have taken so much time.He also said the involvement of the state government in the talks should not be seen as a part of interference nor an obstacle to delay, because the state has just joined the talks. “If there has been delay, the state government does not have any hand in it and will never stand in the way of any arrangement reached between them,” he said.“We are trying to play the healing role between the ENPO and Centre and asking them to come down and accept what is possible on the ground and not to have too lofty programmes on either side,” he said. Former Nagaland governor Padmanabha Acharya passes away

Senior BJP leader and former governor of Nagaland, Padmanabha Acharya, has passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai. Acharya, who was from Udupi in Karnataka, had served as governor of multiple states including Nagaland, Tripura, Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. He had a long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed his condolences, praising Acharya's commitment to the party's ideology.

Will hold ULB elections by April 30, Nagaland tells SC

The Nagaland government has informed the Supreme Court that it has passed a bill reserving one-third of the seats in urban local bodies (ULB) for women. The election process for these seats is expected to be completed by April 30, 2024. The passing of the bill has paved the way for municipal elections in the state after two decades. The top court had previously criticized the non-implementation of the reservation for women in ULBs. The bill was tabled and passed following the direction of the Supreme Court.
