Maratha organisations want Tararani tomb restored
Kolhapur: Members of the Maratha organisations and city-based historians handed over a memorandum to mayor Hasina Faras, demanding restoration of the tomb of Chhatrapati
They have demanded that the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) take steps to develop the tomb. The tomb has been neglected for years and is in need of immediate attention, they said.
Chhatrapati Tararani was the widow of Shivaji Maharaj’s younger son, Rajaram Maharaj. She was the founder of the Karveer kingdom and she established the capital of the Maratha Empire at Panhala which was later shifted to Kolhapur. She fought against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in many wars during 1700 to 1707. She died in Satara in the early 1760s.
Vasantrao Mulik, district head of Maratha Mahasangh, one of the organisations which made the demand, said, “The tomb site was neglected for years now. The KMC should ensure that the partially damaged site is restored and protected. The people are ready to extend help to the KMC if it decides to do so.”
The Karnataka government has recently allocated Rs 2 crore to restore the tomb of Shahaji Maharaj at Hodigere in Davangere district. Shahaji Maharaj was the father of Shivaji Maharaj.
Historians said that Tararani’s achievements must be highlighted as she strived hard to bring the Maratha empire together.
