Shivaji Tarun Mandal lift Shahu Chhatrapati Cup
Kolhapur: Shivaji Tarun Mandal prevailed over Kerala State Electricity Board, Kerala, 5-4 via penalty shootout to win the Shahu Chhatrapati Gold Cup All India football tournament at Chhatrapati Shahu Stadium here on Thursday evening. It was 1-1 in regulation time.The local team turned victorious after an intense battle that ended with goalkeeper Mayuresh Chougule saving Nijo Gilbert’s spot kick with former India captain IM Vijayan in attendance. The winners took home Rs 2.5 lakh in prize money. Four of the 16 local teams made it to the tournament proper after a qualifying phase. The final was attended by over 25,000 spectators.The final saw well-organised attack from both teams. Karan Chavan Bendre scored a field goal in the 18th minute off Sanket Salokhe’s pass to take Shivaji Tarun Mandal ahead. Karun Baby scored a neat goal off Viknesh’s pass nine minutes later.In the penalty shootout, Suyash Hande, Vishal Patil, Sanket Salokhe, Karan Chavan Bedre and Aniket Jadhav converted for Shivaji. Viknesh M, Mohammed Saleem, Arjun V and Gifty Graces equalised for the Kerala team. Renowned teams like Dempo (Goa), Mohamedan Sporting (Kolkata) and Roots (Bengaluru) participated in the event.This tournament was started way back in 1975 by former Kolhapur Sports Association’s (KSA) the then Patron in Chief Shahaji Chhatrapati. The meet was also conducted in 1988, 1991 and 2005. This year it was conducted with enthusiasm on the occasion of the 75th birthday of Shahu Maharaj Chhatrapati, KSA Patron in Chief.Mishika upsets top seedNagpur girl Mishika Tayade knocked out top seeded Aarohi Deshmukh of Pune 0-4, 5-3, 4-0 to enter the semifinals of the Sardar Momin Memorial Under-14 Maharashtra State tennis championships at the Kolhapur Sports Association courts on Thursday.In the last-four, Mishika will take on Nashik’s Ananya Yadav, who accounted for Srushti Mirge of Sambhajinagar 4-1, 4-2.Veera Harpude blanked Shuchita Tripathi 4-0, 4-0. tnn
