3rd accused held for father-son murders; Suti, Shamsherganj ICs removed
Kolkata/Behrampore: The SIT and Bengal STF on Thursday arrested a third person for the murders of Haragobindo Das and son Chandan Das in Jafrabad on April 12.The arrests coincided with both the Shamsherganj and Suti police station inspectors-in-charge being removed. Bengal govt appointed Bhupatinagar circle inspector Subrata Ghosh as Shamsherganj IC and Supriya Ranjan Majhi, the traffic inspector of East Burdwan (Sadar), as the new IC of Suti. The third accused in the Das murders was identified as Inzamul Haq, their neighbour. He was nabbed from Suti, said ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar. "The accused was found trying to disrupt electricity connections to local CCTVs. He was also found vandalising CCTVs so that their act is not caught on camera. We have also identified all others directly or indirectly linked with the murder," said Sarkar.Brothers Kalu Nadab and Dilbar Nadab were arrested the case earlier. The total number of arrests in connection with the Murshidabad violence stood at 274 till Thursday evening. So far, 60 FIRs have been lodged.Police indicated that they were looking into whether there was any intelligence failure after tension that subsided on April 8 flared up again on April 11-12.The SIT, led by DIG (Murshidabad) Syed Waquar Raza, visited the residence of the slain Das duo and spoke to the family. They also visited other affected persons even as a forensic team collected evidence. The action came after a two-hour-long meeting on Wednesday at Shamsherganj, where the future course of action was chalked out. Better coordination and collection of intelligence also came up for discussion.Sarkar said around 70% of shops had reopened in Shamsherganj and Suti. "We are hoping that full restoration will be complete in the next one or two days. There has been not a single untoward incident in the past 96 hours," he said. The ADG said 85 people who left their homes had returned, with many more were expected on Thursday night. "The district administration and police are in constant touch with those who fled their homes. Police teams are being assigned to bring them back. Police and central force pickets have been set up in affected zones and contact numbers of officials, in case of any emergency, have been provided to them," said Sarkar.(Inputs from Sukumar Mahato in Behrampore)
