Babu, the chimpanzee rings in his 34th birthday at Alipore Zoo

Babu the chimpanzee celebrated his 34th birthday in Kolkata on October 26, 2022. Babu was born in Germany in 1988, brought to Chennai’s Arignar Anna Zoological Park a year later and later shifted to the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata in 1998.
Actor Sohini Sengupta and Saptarshi Moulik (the couple who had adopted Babu), Swastika Mukherjee and Mir Afsar Ali were present at the Alipore Zoo to celebrate Babu’s birthday.

How was Babu’s birthday celebrated?

Ø According to zoo officials, Babu was offered a plate of vegetables and fruits of his choice which he relished while onlookers looked at him in awe.

Ø A ‘Best Wishes’ board was hung outside his enclosure for the visitors to write a message for Babu.

Ø Babu hopped and jumped in ecstasy inside his enclosure.

Ø A cake, outside the enclosure, was cut and relished by the visitors.

“It felt so good to see Babu happy yesterday. I am not doing anything extraordinary. We are taking so much from nature and leaving so much carbon print. We forget that we need to give back too. I request all those who can, to adopt the zoo animals, it really impacts the quality of life of these animals. The adoption process is very smooth, and the maintenance fee is also average,” says Sohini Sengupta, who prefers to call Babu her brother rather than her son.
