in the wee hours of Saturday led to the arrest of a 23-year-old upcoming actor who had made his debut four years ago in a hit Bengali film. Son of an established singer and actor, he was arrested with two of his friends — aged 22 and 25, both brothers who had come to the city on a holiday — for possessing 160g
marijuana
.
The cops did not confirm if the actor or any of his friends were found drunk while driving. The trio was travelling in their car around 1.40am from Tollygunge towards Prince Anwar Shah Crossing on the Deshapran Sashmal Road when they were stopped at a naka put up near Tollygunge Club. The car was searched by a joint team of Regent Park police and traffic cops.
“We took them to Regent Park police station where we questioned them about the ownership of the contraband. The actor was produced at the Alipore court on Saturday, where he was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 4,000,” said an investigating officer.
The actor’s lawyer Anirban Guhathakurta told TOI that they would prove in the long run that the case has little legal standing. “This is a false claim against him,” said Guhathakurta. The actor’s father said he was relieved his son had got bail. “I always had faith in the judicial system,” he said. In the morning, he had told TOI: “I really do not believe what is being said. My advice to youngsters though is that they ought to be cautious about the company they keep,” he said.
The police said it was a case of being caught red-handed. “We might slap MV Act on them if required. We are waiting for some further results,” said an officer.
