KOLKATA: A 37-year-old Kolkata police sergeant, pulled out of his usual routine of fighting cybercrime to bolster the force during Tuesday's Chhatra Samaj march to Nabanna, is in danger of losing vision in his left eye after being hit by a brick. The attack came hours before he was to return hometo celebrate his son's fifth birthday.

Debashis Chakraborty, a 2015 officer currently posted as in-charge of cyber cell in East Division, underwent a major surgery in his left eye on Tuesday. He is among the 41 cops injured during the march. "Our windshield was shattered after a brick was thrown at us. The first brick hit my eye. Somehow, the driver managed to get us out of there. I was taken to the hospital. Now, I can't see with my left eye. I don't know if I'll be able to see in future," he said.

An officer who was present at the spot said, “We were initially deployed at 11 Furlong Gate, close to the approach of Vidyasagar Setu on Kidderpore Road. Around 4.30 pm, as reports of violence came from Strand Road, we were sent there. While we were moving towards Strand Road via Kingsway (Eden Garden), we saw around 150 protesters, both men and women, running towards us. Three women stood in front of our vehicles and forced us to stop. Suddenly, their companions started pelting stones at our vehicles. Chakraborty, who was wearing glasses, was in the second vehicle and was hit.”

Kolkata Police has issued a statement saying the cornea and retina of the officer’s left eye has been damaged and doctors will be able to confirm only after a week whether his eye can be saved. His wife said she was relying on the police force to see her through the tough times.

“He (Debashis Chakraborty) wasn’t the only colleague to suffer serious injuries during the protest, which the organisers — members of a so-called students’ organisation — publicly claimed would be a peaceful one,” Kolka ta Police said on Facebook.

Sergeant Sourav Saha of the detective department and police driver of Anandapur PS Debasish Kundu are admitted at CMRI and Fortis Hospital respectively. Constable Nabakumar Mondal of Vidyasagar Traffic Guard and constable Ujjal Dey Sarkar of Amherst Street PS sustained severe head injuries and are admitted at CMRI and Marwari Hospital respectively.
