Court directs Kolkata Police commissioner to tackle ‘illegal acts’ of his personnel

Kolkata: The judgment by Sealdah Sessions Court Judge Anirban Das indicated several lapses on the part of Kolkata Police, especially officials from Tala PS, who were indicted in the judgment, and asked the commissioner to tackle "illegal acts" of his men."I am of the view that if the officers of Tala PS took proper initiative by applying their intellect at the very first time, the matter would not become so complicated," the judgment stated.The judgment also asked the Kolkata Police commissioner to be "strict" about the "indifferent attitude" of the cops and urged him to ensure proper training for his men. "As he is the highest administrative authority of Kolkata Police, I think that this type of illegal/indifferent acts of the police personnel should be tackled by him in a very strict way so that no one can escape," the judge said.Among those indicted for lodging the GD was SI Subrata Chatterjee, posted at Tala PS. "This evidence of one SI (Chatterjee) is an eye-opener that police stations are treating the cases in a very indifferent manner. I condemn such acts of SI Subrata Chatterjee," the judgment said.The judgement also questioned why "the parents of the victim were not allowed/advised to lodge a complaint and why the police authority kept them waiting till 6 pm". ASI Anup Dutta, under whom convicted KP civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was attached, was pulled up by the court for his role. An additional OC was also pulled up for her role in handling crucial evidence. "Her action of taking the mobile from the accused on Aug 9 and keeping it at Tala PS unattended is a very curious one," the judgment read.
