'Few takers for core science subjects'

KOLKATA: Surendranath College admission coordinator Nilansu Das said: "Students these days want to pursue courses that have job prospects. This is the reason why some subjects have high demand and some have huge vacancies."

Principals say over the past few years, they have observed declining interest in core subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics, philosophy and Sanskrit and a huge craze for subjects like English, psychology, zoology and commerce.

New Alipore College principal Jaydeep Sarangi said the admission graph in the college was better this year but the additional seats under EWs category was one of the reasons behind the vacancies. "Students who cancelled their admission have either shifted to technical courses or professional courses," he said.

Netaji Nagar Day College principal Sonali Banerjee Jash admitted the number of fresh applicants after reopening the portal was not satisfactory. "We face challenges in filling seats in some core science subjects, philosophy and Sanskrit. This is the scene in all degree colleges with students more interested in professional courses," she said.

Andrews College principal Somnath Mukhopadhyay said, "We have sericulture and electronics but there are very few takers. Students choose those subjects that have career prospects but colleges have to run these courses even if students don’t take admission."
