Haridevpur man held for ‘raping’ tenant

Kolkata: Haridevpur Police has arrested a 42-year-old man, the son of the landlord, for allegedly raping his tenant’s wife. The assault took place early on Tuesday morning in the Purba Barisha area in east Behala when the 23-year-old woman was sleeping after her husband left the house for some work. Police arrested the accused hours after the complaint was lodged. He was tracked down using both technical surveillance and source information. The role of other family members of the accused is under scanner.“A female tenant residing in Barisha came to the police station on Tuesday morning to lodge the complaint. According to her, she was sleeping inside her room, which was locked, around 5am. The accused — Pintu Dey alias Babu — came inside the room by using a master key of the house and allegedly raped her. The woman informed her husband of the incident and after consulting him, decided to report it to the police,” said an investigating officer. “A case has been lodged under IPC 376 (rape) and a manhunt was launched. Based on inputs, he was nabbed from an address — not far from his residence — where he was hiding,” said DC (Behala) Saumya Roy. Cops said the accused had been giving several convoluted answers, including his profession. The accused was produced in court on Tuesday evening.“There is a possibility that the accused had been planning this crime over some time. After commission of offence, the accused had fled away from the locality and was trying to secure a safe passage. We will record the statement of the complainant soon. We will also try to carry out an in-custody trial,” said an officer from the Behala division.
