KOLKATA: Prasun Dey told cops on Monday that it was he who had murdered his daughter, 14-year-old Priyamvada Dey, on Feb 18. The revelation came hours after the younger of the two Dey brothers at the heart of a "suicide pact" in Tangra was arrested after discharge from hospital.

Details of how exactly he committed the crime, however, are awaited. Earlier, Prasun had told cops that he had slashed the wrists of his wife, Romi, and sister-in-law, Sudeshna, but had insisted he not killed his daughter.

The 43-year-old walked out of the orthopaedic ward of NRS Hospital in the afternoon — where he was being treated for injuries suffered during a car crash on the morning of Feb 19 — to be escorted to Tangra police station.

He was arrested after being questioned for four-and-a-half hours, said Rupesh Kumar, joint CP (crime & traffic).

Elder brother Pranay and his son Pratip (14) have yet to be declared fit for release by doctors.

Senior officers at Lalbazar said Prasun would be questioned at length about the events leading to the deaths of Romi, Sudeshna and Priyamvada.

The cops plan to take him to their residence in Tangra to reconstruct the crime. "We will finish his part first and then tally his version with that of his elder brother, Pranay," a source said.

The cops also wish to question Prasun on the allegation of Pratip — his nephew — that Prasun had tried to murder him at least four times between Feb 17 and Feb 19: the boy was first served payesh laced with medicines; second, Prasun tried to smother him with a pillow; third, Prasun had tried to slash Pratip's wrist; and finally, Prasun had rammed the car, in which Pratip was also an occupant, into a metro pillar at high speed.

Cops said Prasun had already admitted to slitting the wrist of Romi and Sudeshna on Feb 18.

Prasun's father-in-law had filed a murder complaint regarding the incident.

"We also want to question the two brothers to find out who planned the mayhem," an officer said.
