Jhargram (ST) election results 2024 live updates: TMC's Kalipada Saren wins

NEW DELHI: Kalipada Saren (Kherwal) from the All India Trinamool Congress emerged victorious in the Jhargram constituency, securing 743,478 votes and defeating the closest rival, Dr. Pranat Tudu from the Bharatiya Janata Party, by a margin of 174,048 votes. Dr. Tudu received 569,430 votes, falling short of the winning candidate's tally.

Sonamani Tudu from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) secured the third position with 77,302 votes, trailing the winner by a significant margin of 666,176 votes. Surya Singh Besra from the Jharkhand People's Party and Barun Mahato, an independent candidate, obtained 19,494 and 12,087 votes, respectively.

Arunkumar Hansda from the Bahujan Samaj Party and Surendranath Sing, another independent candidate, received 11,989 and 10,787 votes, respectively. Ramanath Orang, Biplab Hembram, and Bapi Soren, all contesting as independents, secured 7,188, 7,170, and 5,895 votes, respectively.

Birsabir Baskey from the Ambedkarite Party of India, Sushil Mandi from the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), and Gunadhar Sing, an independent candidate, received 4,362, 2,892, and 2,849 votes, respectively.

The NOTA (None of the Above) option was chosen by 15,920 voters in the constituency.

The constituency, situated in the southern part of West Bengal, encompasses districts like Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, and Purulia. Classified as a rural constituency with a reservation status for Scheduled Tribe (ST), Jhargram went to the polls on May 25, 2024.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha general elections, Jhargram witnessed Phase 6 polling on May 12, 2019, with a voter turnout of 85.71%. The elections resulted in a significant victory for the BJP's Kunar Hembrom, marking a noteworthy shift in the constituency's political landscape. In the 2014 elections, AITC's Dr. Uma Saren surpassed CPI(M)'s Dr. Pulin Bihari, signaling the evolving political dynamics within Jhargram.

Established in 1962, the Jhargram parliamentary constituency has experienced shifts in political dominance, transitioning from Congress to CPI(M) influence before witnessing competitive contests between the CPI(M) and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). Initially renowned as an agricultural center, the constituency's political narrative evolved, with the AITC challenging the CPI(M)'s long-held dominance.

With a predominantly Bengali and Hindu population, Jhargram boasts a high literacy rate of 80%, underscoring the emphasis on education across genders. According to the 2011 Census, the rural population comprises 94.37% of the constituency, with Scheduled Castes and Tribes constituting significant proportions at 18.24% and 25.76%, respectively.
