In a statement, he noted that the rape and murder of the trainee postgraduate woman doctor at West Bengal's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital has deeply shaken the nation's conscience.

"The anger and frustration of the entire nation is over the fact that she happened to be a budding doctor as well as that she was the only girl child of lower-middle-class parents. The entire nation has adopted her as their daughter," the IMA chief said.

BJP activists clashed with police at Panskura and Onda during their protest against the West Bengal government over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a Kolkata hospital last month. The protesters, demanding the resignation of chief minister Mamata Banerjee for her "failure" to prevent such incidents, chanted slogans and burned tyres at Panskura in Paschim Medinipur district and Onda in Bankura district.

A scuffle erupted between the activists and police during the gherao of district administration offices at both locations, but the situation was quickly brought under control, according to officials.

Former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal, Sandip Ghosh, filed an appeal with the Supreme Court on Wednesday, contesting the Calcutta High Court's order to transfer his corruption case to the CBI. His plea will be heard on September 6 by a bench led by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

This follows Ghosh's arrest by the CBI two days earlier, as part of their investigation into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar College, particularly concerning the procurement of materials for patient care.

"If CBI is saying that there was some disturbance at the place of occurrence then they have to justify this and if they do that, they have to answer what action have they taken against that person who created the disturbance," he added.

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was placed in eight-day custody on Tuesday following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the state-run facility.

During the court proceedings, the CBI argued that Ghosh was part of a broader network involved in the misconduct and emphasized the need for further interrogation to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy. The agency initially sought a 10-day custody for Ghosh, suggesting that additional offences might emerge as the investigation progresses.

However, the judge remanded Ghosh and three others to eight days of custody. The next court hearing is scheduled for September 10, when the CBI is expected to present further findings from the ongoing investigation.
