Police busts gang that cheated financial firms to buy high-end mobile phones

KOLKATA: The police have arrested a woman for allegedly leading a gang that would persuade mobile sellers to arrange for bank loans and buy high end mobile phones. Once they were bought based on fake documents – after convincing the financial firm – the accused would disappear without leaving a trace and paying back the loan to the firm. The arrested person has been identified as one Sonali Banerjee alias Kanishka Bose (35), a resident of K K Roy Road near

Amherst

Street.

The complaint was lodged by one Kallol

Chakraborty of Bajaj Finance Limited

at

Bowbazar

police station. (case no 329 dt 17.09.16 u/s 467/468/471/420/120B IPC) It was recorded against one Kanishka Bose. It was learnt that the name and address and documents submitted by so called Kanishka Bose were fake. “Investigation was taken up and subsequently one Sonali Banerjee alias Kanishka Bose was arrested on February 17. On the basis of her questioning, her other associates namely Lalit Sharma (37), Goutam Roy (35) and Suman Roy (35) were arrested on Friday,” said joint CP (crime) Vishal Garg.

“The accused persons followed a simple modus operandi of going to big mobile shops and inducing the shopkeepers to

finance

costly mobile phones by giving forged documents. They used to pay the initial down payment and then go underground. As all their documents were forged, they could not be traced by the financing agency. The misappropriated mobile phones in this case are yet to be recovered,” said Garg. The accused were produced in court on Saturday where police custody was sought.
