NEW DELHI: Bhaichung Bhutia, the erstwhile skipper of India's national football squad, faced a defeat in the Sikkim assembly elections as Sikkim Krantikari Morcha's Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia emerged victorious from Barfung constituency.
Baichung Bhutia was only able to secure 4,012 votes in comparison to SKM candidate who secured 8,358 votes to win from the constituency. The margin between the two exceeded 4,000 votes after the final round of counting.
In 2018, Bhutia established his own party the Hamro Sikkim Party but decided to merge it with the SDF last year.
The overall scenario in the state also paints a grim picture for Bhutia and his political party the Sikkim Democratic Front.
The SKM returned to power by sweeping the assembly polls in the Himalayan state, winning 31 of the 32 seats, according to the Election Commission. The opposition Sikkim Democratic Front could manage only one seat. Elections to the Sikkim Assembly were held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls on April 19.
