Kerala man dies after setting himself ablaze in car; wife, 3 children injured

KOZHIKODE: A 45-year-old man died, and his wife and three children suffered injuries after he allegedly set himself on fire inside the car in a suspected suicide attempt at Erumatheruvu near Mananthavady, Wayanad around 10pm on Thursday.

The deceased was Sajeer M P of Malayanteparambath House at Vallithode near Iritty, Kannur.

His wife Najmunnisa, 37, and their two-year-old daughter Aisha suffered burn injuries, while their sons Nibran, 14, and Nisan, 9, escaped unhurt.

Najmunnisa and Aisha are undergoing treatment at the Mananthavady govt medical college hospital. Najmunnisa has sustained 50% burns, while Aisha’s injuries were reported to be minor.

Sajeer reportedly parked the car in front of the house of E C Bappu with whom he had financial and business dealings. He then poured petrol on himself before setting himself ablaze.

Before the incident, Sajeer had recorded a video levelling allegations against Bappu. He also recorded a video against another person to whom he had handed over his textile shop.

Mananthavady police inspector said that the couple’s eldest son managed to get out of the car and pull out his siblings and mother. Police launched an investigation into the incident.
