LUCKNOW: The name of a Bihar-based criminal Vinay Sharma, currently lodged in Buxar jail, surfaced on Thursday during probe in Charbagh shooting in which gangster Gorakh Thakur was shot at by two bike-borne assailants in rivalry for railway contracts.

Thakur told police that Vinay could be behind the attack. GRP Charbagh SHO Somveer Singh said, “The assailants could have come from Bihar. Gorakh has told us that he has old rivalry with Vinay Sharma and several shootouts took place between their gangs.” Police identified the assailants in CCTV footage on the basis of the account of Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable R K Singh. The CCTV footage shows that the entire episode ended within four minutes. Gorakh arrived at 1.06pm and assailants escaped at 1.10pm after shooting at the target. One of them also dropped the helmet he was holding in his hand. Officials are taking help of Bihar police to identify the shooters.

TOI also contacted senior police officials of West Champaran district in Bihar where majority of criminal cases against Gorakh are registered. SSP Jayant Kant said that Gorakh was a rival of Vinay Sharma and had been involved in railway contracts in the district.

“Besides handling his business in Bihar, we have learnt that Thakur was also getting into illegal mining business in UP,” he said.
