Congress MP Pramod Tiwari claims BJP will 'swallow' Shiv Sena in Maharashtra
Lucknow: Congress MP Pramod Tiwari has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of sidelining its allies and “swallowing” its partners, following the outcome of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
His remarks came after the Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP and the Shiv Sena, emerged victorious in the civic polls, winning control of 25 of Maharashtra’s 29 municipal bodies.
Tiwari alleged that the BJP’s political approach was rooted in deceit and betrayal.
"The BJP's tactics, character, face, and history are all about deceit and betrayal. Those who side with them, they end up swallowing them whole. That's exactly what happened in Mumbai... Now they want to swallow them (Shiv Sena) too," Pramod Tiwari told ANI.
He also described the election victory and the alliance as “fake”, claiming the BJP’s political dominance would not last.
"This palace of sin that the BJP has built, when it crumbles, everyone will be seen standing apart from them... I declare this election victory fake... After a fake election, a fake alliance has been formed," the Congress leader said.
The comments came amid reports that Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister had moved newly elected corporators to a hotel and was preparing to stake a claim for the mayor’s post.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said the Mahayuti alliance will form mayors in 25 of the state’s 29 civic bodies.
According to official figures from the BMC elections, the BJP secured a vote share of 45.22 per cent among all winning candidates, making it the single largest party in the civic body. Its alliance partner, the Shiv Sena, won 29 seats with 2,73,326 votes, accounting for five per cent of the total vote share.
The Shiv Sena (UBT), contesting in alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, won 65 seats. The UBT-led Sena polled 7,17,736 votes, or 13.13 per cent of the total votes cast, while the MNS added six seats with 74,946 votes, representing a 1.37 per cent vote share.
The Indian National Congress secured 24 seats with 2,42,646 votes, accounting for 4.44 per cent of the total vote share.
