Football-sized tumor weighing 3kg removed
Lucknow: Doctors at a private hospital have successfully removed a football-sized neuroendocrine tumour weighing approximately 3Kg from a patient's liver."This is one of the largest neuroendocrine tumours ever removed in the state and country. Such tumours grow to immense sizes because their symptoms appear late. Even after symptoms appeared, the patient spent a long time visiting various hospitals for treatment. The tumour posed a severe risk to the patient's life," said Dr Ashish Mishra, senior consultant in liver transplant and HPB surgery at Apollo Medics Super Specialty, who led the procedure. The surgery was done last week. The patient was seeking treatment for over two years across multiple hospitals but was unable to receive care. Initially, the patient had a 2 cm neuroendocrine tumour in the rectum, which later metastasised to the liver, forming three large tumours, the largest measuring 27-28 cm.Despite the tumour's size, which damaged nearby organs, the symptoms only became apparent at a later stage. Dr Mishra's team successfully removed all four tumours in a single surgery, an approach that typically requires two separate procedures. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Apollo Medics. The patient recovered quickly and was discharged within 7-8 days. The patient experienced significant weight loss before the surgery and is now gradually regaining weight.MD and CEO of Apollo Medics Dr Mayank Somani said: "This highlights the exceptional quality of medical care we provide. We are dedicated to offering cutting-edge services for complex cases. Our team's success proves our capability to overcome any challenge."
