Junkie drives away with Ghazipur SHO’s jeep

Deepak Dubey was recovered from Buddheshwar crossing at 6.30am almost 23km from the police station but it kept policemen on their toes all day. The constable driver has been suspended for the negligence. This was the third instance of official vehicle of a policeman being lifted from the city in the past one year.

The person arrested was identified as Sharad Tewari, resident of Sarvodayanagar. Tewari has passed BSc with maths from a private college in Hardoi. He was arrested after being identified from the

CCTV

footage which showed a youth sporting tattoo of a trident on his forehead and lurking around the police station. His whereabouts were traced and he was finally arrested from his house.

ASP (trans-Gomti) Durgesh Kumar said Sharad Tewari confessed he was under influence of drugs when had reached the police station on Tuesday night. He also said he had gone to the police station after he was rebuked by his parents for his bad habit and was asking the police personnel to arrest him. Tewari said when he spotted the police jeep parked and its keys in the ignition block, he sat in it and drove away.

Police said Tewari drove the vehicle towards Polytechnique crossing and then towards Shaheed Path taking Mohan road to reach Buddheshwar crossing, where he abandoned the vehicle and took an auto to reach home.

Ghazipur police circle officer D K Puri said “We were working on the case of a missing jeep (UP33AG/0406) when SHO Deepak Dubey went out to and could not find his vehicle.

Puri said Dubey’s driver constable Narendra Kumar was suspended because he had left the keys in the jeep while it was parked on the road, making it soft target for auto lifters.
