KGMU dept gets its own robotic surgical system
Lucknow: Marking an advancement in precision surgery, the general surgery department at King George's Medical University (KGMU) on Tuesday received its own robotic surgical system under corporate social responsibility.The system was formally handed over by Yogesh Kumar Dixit, executive director, north zone, Power Grid Corporation of India, in the presence of Vice Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand and head of the surgery department, Prof Abhinav Arun Sonkar.Prof Nityanand highlighted the impact of robotic surgery in improving surgical precision and patient outcomes.The surgery department also commenced a three-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme for postgraduate students.On the first day, discussions focused on head and neck surgery, thyroid disorders, and breast cancer surgery, with expert speakers from SGPGIMS, KGMU, and other medical colleges. Around 120 postgraduate students from various medical institutions in UP participated.Prof Anand Mishra, head endocrine surgery department, KGMU, emphasised the importance of iodine supplementation in preventing goitre and discussed surgical treatment options.Dr Nikhil Singh, Dr Prakash Singh, and Dr Kulranjan Singh explained that thyroid surgery is a safe and effective treatment when necessary.Prof Abhinav Arun Sonkar discussed parotid gland diseases and the importance of early surgical intervention in treating parotid cancers.Dr Pooja Ramakant elaborated on breast cancer treatment, stressing the need for early detection and emphasising breast conservation surgery as a safe alternative to full breast removal when diagnosed early.The day concluded with a live workshop on breast ultrasound, conducted by Dr Gitika Nanda, Dr Kulranjan Singh, and Dr Kushagra Gaurav, providing hands-on training for postgraduate students.
