Uttar Pradesh: Low turnout in Lok Sabha bypolls in Rampur and Azamgarh

LUCKNOW: Low voter turnout was recorded on Thursday for bypolls to two parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. According to the Election Commission of India, by 7 pm, Rampur registered 39.02 % voter turnout, while Amzagarh recorded 48.58%. On an average, the two constituencies reported 43.8% voter turnout.



This is far less than the voter turnout recorded in two seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In 2019, Azamgarh had recorded a voter turnout of 57.56% while Rampur had recorded 63.19% polling.

In Rampur, six candidates are contesting the Lok Sabha bypolls, including BJP's Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi and Samajwadi party's Asim Raza, who is close aide of party veteran Azam Khan.

In Azamgarh, 13 candidates, including BJP-backed Dinesh Lal Yadav alias Nirahua, Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav and BSP-supported Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali, are contesting.

The counting of votes and declaration of the result for the bypolls will be done on June 26.
