Lucknow: In an initiative aimed at reducing road accidents and disciplining commuters, UP traffic police began a month-long road safety drive on Friday.
Additional director general of police, traffic, Ashok Singh said that every week on two days a specific violation will be taken to task across the state and challans will be issued to the violators.
“As many as 21 major violations committed by commuters are being taken up which will be covered in a month,” he added.
On July 15, the issue of driving without licence will be taken up while next day it will be about drunk driving. Next week we will be conducting a drive without seat belts, using pressure horns, and talking on mobile while riding a vehicle. Thereafter issues of speeding, not wearing a seat belt and riding three on two-wheelers will be addressed.
The officer added that 10,000 home guards have been deputed to the traffic department for enforcement of rules.
Traffic police officials said encroachment, illegal parking slots will also be removed. Senior officials also said that PWD and NHAI have identified 1,454 accident prone sites as black spots which are also being worked up in coordination with other agencies. Traffic police will also take action against people who obstruct traffic on public roads by organising ceremonies, parties.
